SUMMARY:

Introduction: Medication errors can lead to harm and global and national actions have been studied to prevent them and thus to promote the strengthening of patient safety barriers. From this perspective, there is a need to discuss patient’s own drug, which is taken from home to the hospital and which, for various reasons, may not be available at the institution. Thus, developing quality management activities is essential for better results in health care for patients who use their own medication in hospital services. Objective: To evaluate and improve the process of dispensing and administering patients' own medication in a secondary hospital in the state of Ceara. Methodology: This is a quasi-experimental before-and-after study with no control group and a quantitative approach, with data collection in November 2023, January and March 2024. Between each data collection, multifaceted interventions were implemented to improve the service. Seven criteria were considered to verify the quality of the process of using the patient's own medication in two storage locations: pharmacy and bedside. The data was imported into the IBM-SPSS software and Fisher's Exact Test was applied to verify the association between the variables. The project was approved by the research ethics committee of the Instituto de Saude e Gestao Hospitalar, under CAEE: 74775723.5.0000.5684. Results: In the initial assessment there was variation in the level of compliance of the criteria in both storage locations. In the re-evaluation, measured 90 days after the first interventions, there was an absolute improvement in all the criteria, regardless of where they were stored. The improvement was significant for three criteria in the bedside storage scenario (C3 - adequate scheduling, C4 - compliant administration and C6 - correct storage and identification). Interventions were implemented regarding the professionals' work process, recording systems and educational actions. Conclusion: The study showed that the multifaceted activities are effective in improving the quality of the use of patients' own medicines in the institution, achieving their objective, and highlighting the importance of their continuity and improvement in order to achieve increasingly significant results.
