Diagnosis of Motherhood and Scientific Careers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte: A Study on Challenges, Institutional Impact, and Support Strategies for Scientist Mothers
Motherhood. Women. Gender Equity. Scientific Career. University.
This study aims to develop an institutional diagnosis of the challenges faced by women researchers who are mothers at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), considering the difficulties of balancing an academic career with family and caregiving responsibilities. The research adopts a mixed methodological approach, combining quantitative and qualitative instruments to map experiences, identify structural barriers, and highlight coping strategies employed by these women in their daily academic routines. In addition to the application of surveys and individual interviews, a focus group is planned; the study will also analyze existing institutional policies, internal regulations, and practices related to maternity leave, parental support, schedule flexibility, and gender equity promotion. The research seeks to understand how motherhood impacts the academic trajectory of women researchers and which mechanisms can be strengthened or implemented to foster a more inclusive, fair, and gender-sensitive environment. At the conclusion, a set of recommendations will be presented, focusing on affirmative actions, institutional guidelines, and public policy proposals aimed at valuing motherhood within academia. This study aims to contribute to the advancement of gender equity discussions in higher education, recognizing the plurality of women’s experiences and the importance of creating pathways that ensure the retention and success of scientist mothers within the university.
