Psychological Distress in Academic Settings: Development of a Monitoring Protocol for Mental Health Status and Associated Factors Among Graduate Students at a Public University
University; Mental health; Postgraduate studies; Student assistance.
Issues related to health and well-being have gained prominence in recent years, and within public universities, there has been a growing effort to seek solutions through institutional policies and programs, given the recognized increase in the incidence of psychological distress among university students affected by anxiety disorders, excessive stress, and depression, as highlighted by various studies and the experience of clinical psychology linked to student support services. Considering the multidimensional nature of the factors that influence mental health in the academic environment, the project presented here aims to investigate possible correlations between mental health, socio-demographic characteristics, and factors associated with the university context among graduate students at a public university. This descriptive and cross-sectional research will use closed and open-ended questionnaires made available to students via the internet. The collected data will later be analyzed using statistical tools and either quantitative-qualitative or mixed-method approaches. The proposed initiative falls within the scope of higher education retention policies and intends to produce, as its main output, a protocol for monitoring the mental health status and associated factors of university students. This protocol will contribute to the creation of an institutional database to support the planning of mental health promotion actions for students and to serve as a basis for future research.
