Architectural design of IoT-based healthcare applications
IoT, healthcare, platform, software architecture
Overall, there is a global concern with the increasing number of patients at hospitals
caused by population aging and chronic diseases. Several studies indicated the need to
minimize the process of hospitalization and the eects related to the high cost of patient
care. In this context, a promising trend in healthcare is to move medical check routines
from a hospital (hospital-centric) to the patient's home (home-centric), but to make it
possible we need Internet of Things (IoT)-based technologies and platforms to enable
intelligent remote health monitoring. The use of IoT in the healthcare eld represents
hope since it will allow hospitals to operate more eciently and patients to receive better
treatment. With the use of IoT-based healthcare applications, there is an unprecedented
opportunity to improve the quality and eciency of the medical care and consequently
improve patients' wellness, in addition to better use the government's nancial resources.
Thus, this thesis aims to improve the understanding and systematization of the IoT-based
healthcare applications' architectural design. It proposes a software reference architecture
that systematizes the design of IoT-based healthcare applications software architectures.
Then, we developed an IoT-based healthcare platform using the proposed reference architecture,
which performs the intelligent remote monitoring of patients in critical condition.
It involves embedding sensors and actuators in patients, physicians, clinical sta, medical
equipment and physical spaces to monitor, track and alert.
