Velocity Analysis on Seismic Data – A Parallel Approach using CUDA
Velocity Analysis, Seismic velocity field, Seismic reflection, GPU, CUDA.
With the advancement of hydrocarbon exploration, industry has always sought ways to minimize exploratory risks, one of these ways is the improvement of the tools used. There are three steps in this exploration, the seismic data acquisition, seismic processing and seismic interpretation, the present work will be located in the seismic processing specifically in one of its stages, the seismic velocity analysis, which aims to find through known algorithms of analysis, the seismic velocity field that offer trustworthy of the earth sub-surface. One of the objectives of this work is to generate ways to facilitate this velocity
analysis by implementing these algorithms so that they work integrated in a single platform of analysis. Another point that this advance brought, was the considerable increase in the volume of seismic data acquired, which led more and more to the need of computers and that they were more powerful, given this need, will be presented a brief study on the GPU together with The CUDA architecture, showing how it was used to accelerate the key velocity analysis algorithms. At the end, case studies will be presented, showing the performance results of the algorithms in the CPU and GPU version.
