RESUMO:

The Web as we knew it until the early 2000s, called the Web of Documents, provided the creation of a worldwide network of information connected through links between pages; however, this system did not include the connection between distinct databases, leaving them isolated as information islands. To solve this problem, the Web of Documents has undergone transformations to become the Web of Data, following a set of good practices known as Linked Data, which provides guidelines for expressing relationships between data even if they are stored in different databases. Among the technologies involved in the implementation of Linked Data is the Resource Description Framework (RDF), which enables documents to describe properties of things and to establish relationships between them.

An RDF database can be easily viewed as a graph and, in this way, querying information can be done by traversing paths within the corresponding graph, for which it is necessary a language to express such queries. There is currently a standard language for querying RDF databases called SPARQL, which allows to define paths using regular expressions. Due to expressivity limitations of regular languages, other works proposed to increase this expressiveness through the use of context-free languages, which, despite the benefits achieved, resulted in a decrease in the performance of query evaluation. From this point on, this work proposes to develop a context-free language (and its evaluation mechanism) for querying RDF databases which is more expressive than regular languages, but still keeps a good evaluation performance.
