COMPETENCY ASSESSMENT: PERCEPTION OF MULTIPROFESSIONAL HEALTHCARE RESIDENTS
Professional Performance Evaluation; Formative Feedback; Preceptorship.
Introduction: Assessment is a relevant step for improving the quality of educational processes, and its discussion is extensive, complex, and requires consensus to find the best evaluative system. It is intrinsic to the act of teaching and a possibility to expand and improve the knowledge acquired by the resident. The 360-degree evaluation is one of the most appropriate tools for analyzing competencies and consists of an assessment where the evaluated person self-assesses and receives feedback from all those who interact with them such as preceptors, peers, patients, and managers. Objectives: This study aims to analyze the perception of multiprofessional health residents from two University Hospitals in Rio Grande do Norte regarding the evaluation carried out in these institutions. Methods: This is a descriptive exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted with residents. Data collection took place from January to March 2023 is at March 2024, and the study population consisted of residents of the Multiprofessional Health Residency program. Data collection was carried out at three moments and through two techniques: Focus group and individual interviews, which were recorded and transcribed verbatim. The data were analyzed using Bardin's Content Analysis. The study was submitted and approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital under Opinion No. 3,084,892/2018. Twenty three residents participated in the research, where, based on the analysis of the interviews and the focus group, the data were examined, decoded, and grouped by similarity of subjects, and it was possible to list 03 thematic categories: Perceptions regarding the evaluation process; Weaknesses in the evaluation process; Strengths in the residency evaluation process. Results and discussion: The study enabled us to understand the perception of residents of a Multiprofessional Health Residency regarding performance evaluation and thus contribute to health education by seeking to understand how the resident perceives evaluation, which may reflect on the improvement of the evaluation process. Final considerations: The research reveals a significant gap in the evaluation of preceptors, which directly impacts the training and development of residents. Despite this gap, residents demonstrate an admirable capacity for self-knowledge and a broad view of their performance. Each interaction offers a new perspective on their skills and competencies, promoting continuous learning and a more complete understanding of their roles in the healthcare team.
