SUMMARY:

The frequency of self-inflicted violence has increased significantly in recent decades, becoming a global public health problem. In Brazil, among the guidelines that guarantee health care and assistance to victims of self-inflicted violence are the Psychiatric Reform, the National Mental Health Policy, especially with regard to the Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS), the National Humanization Policy (BRASIL, 2004), Ordinance No. 1,876/2006, which establishes National Guidelines for Suicide Prevention and highlights the importance of research focused on the subject, Ordinance No. 1,600/2011, which reformulated the National Emergency Care Policy and established the Emergency Care Network in the Unified Health System, and Law No. 13,819/2019, which establishes the National Policy for the Prevention of Self-harm and Suicide (BRASIL, 2019). Often, and for various reasons, emergency services, especially 24-hour Emergency Care Units, are the main gateway to access mental health services. However, the profile of emergency services, together with the reality of high demand, has an unfavorable impact on the care of mental disorders. This study aims to systematize recommendations for the approach to the reception of victims of self-inflicted violence in health education, based on the perception and experiences of higher education health professionals (nurses, doctors and social workers) who work at the Emergency Care Unit in the western zone of Natal/RN. Therefore, this is a case study, with a qualitative and exploratory approach in relation to the achievement of the objectives.
