SUMMARY:

The cytopathological exam (Pap smear) is essential in identifying abnormal cells in the cervix, i.e. in preventing cancer. In the context of this exam being performed by male nurses, it becomes relevant to understand the perceptivos and feelings of future healthcare professionals, such as nursing and medical students, who will be directly involved in continuing this practice. In this sense, the present study aimed to explore the perspectives of these students, as well as women users of a Basic Health Unit (UBS), regarding the collection of the cytopathological exam performed by male nursing professionals. This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach, conducted at a UBS located in the municipality of Parnamirim-RN. Data collection was carried out through interviews with semi-structured questionnaires and focus groups (FG), dividing the study into two stages. The data analysis used the thematic categorical content analysis technique proposed by Bardin. The focus groups conducted with Nursing and Medical students resulted in the identification of two main categories, subdivided into four subcategories, totaling 52 units of analysis. Meanwhile, the analysis of interviews with UBS users revealed three categories, divided into seven subcategories, with a total of 71 units of analysis. The results indicated complex perceptions regarding the collection of the cytopathological exam by male nurses, highlighting aspects related to both acceptance and barriers encountered. Although patients demonstrate an understanding of the exam's importance for the prevention of gynecological diseases, the presence of a male nurse may cause discomfort, mainly due to cultural influences and social norms. The data revealed that students' perceptions align with these challenges, emphasizing the need for strategies to promote greater acceptance of this practice and reduce sociocultural barriers. Thus, the research contributes to broadening the understanding of the factors impacting the performance of the cytopathological exam by male professionals and provides insights to improve the training and performance of these professionals in the context of primary care.
