SUMMARY:

Purpose: To investigate the effects of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and Destraining (washout) on metabolic profile, quality of life and mental health in women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Methods: A total of 23 women with PCOS (aged 21-34 years) who were allocated into a control group (n = 11) and a supervised HIIT group (n= 12). The 12-week of HIIT consisted of sessions 40-60 min in length 3 days per week under the supervision. Metabolic profile, quality of life and mental health (questionnaire) were assessed. The differences in all variables, and the relative changes between baseline, 12 weeks and detraining (30 days).

Results: There was no difference between the HIIT group and the control group (p <0.05) (baseline). The participants were classified as overweight, had a high percentage of fat percentage and irregular menstrual cycles (amenorrhea). When analyzing the anthropometric data, the two groups showed a significant group-time interaction for waist-to-hip ratio (ES, 1.0; P = 0.001). In comparison with the baseline, there were no significant changes and interactions between times (pre-post and destraining) in the metabolic profile between groups. The HIIT group showed improvements and significant interaction in the domains functional capacity (ES, 1.7; P = 0.022), physical aspects (ES, 1.7, P = 0.027), general status (ES, 3.1, P = 0.021), anxiety (ES, 1.0, P = 0.025) and depression (ES, 1.7, P = 0.031) (pre-post). Negative responses were found in the HIIT group after detraining in the domains of quality of life.

Conclusion: The HIIT program promoted an improvement about the quality of life and mental health in women with PCOS; additionally, it was observed that after 4 weeks of detraining there was a reduction in quality of life, however, the mental health domains (anxiety and depression) showed a stability in the HIIT group different from the control group.
