RESUMO:

Sarcopenia has been conceptualized as the loss of muscle mass and strength that occurs with advancing age, even among the healthy elderly. However, the evaluation
of this condition requires expensive and inaccessible methods for the general population. Thus, the present study aims to track and identify biomarkers capable to
differentiate elderly with and without sarcopenia through infrared biospectroscopy and mass spectrometry for a rapid detection to save time, effort and cost. Elderly
residents in the community over 65 years old with and without sarcopenia will be enrolled in the study. The diagnosis of sarcopenia will be performed following the
algorithm proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. The analysis of muscle mass will be used DEXA, a non-invasive, fast and reliable
method to measure body composition; muscle strength will be assessed by grip strength; and a cutoff point of less than 0.8 m/s in the walking speed test will be used
to characterize a low physical performance. After blood sample collection, the blood plasma will be separated by gradient density difference, transferred to tubules and
stored at -80 °C for further analysis. The analyzes will be conducted with a Bruker VERTEX 70 FTIR spectrometer composed by a Helios ATR bond with a reflective
diamond inner crystal using an angle of incidence of the IR beam. In addition, mass spectrometry will be performed to identify biomarkers capable of differentiate
sarcopenic from non-sarcopenic participants. Therefore, it is expected to study the biomarkers involved in the sarcopenia process to provide early screening of
sarcopenia in a simple, cheap and comprehensible way to the entire elderly population, contributing to the elaboration of public policies
