RESUMO:

Objectives: Recent clinical trials have suggested the antidepressant potential of some psychedelic serotonergics, such as Ayahuasca. There is evidence of cognitive impairment associated with depressive status, but there is no consensus as to the neuropsychological pattern representative of depression. The objectives of this research was to evaluate the neuropsychological profile of a patients group diagnosed with MDD, in order to investigate a possible therapeutic effect of Ayahuasca for the remission of depressive symptoms.

Methods: A total of 70 volunteers (60% female and 40% male) were evaluated, 24 were diagnosed with MDD and 46 were matched controls according to the socio-demographic profile. The cognitive functions were verified from a battery of neuropsychological tests.

Results: Healthy subjects, after ingesting Ayahuasca or placebo, presented a decrease in mental engagement and operational memory, as well as a better performance in executive functions, working memory and attention. The group of patients with MDD after using Ayahuasca demonstrated a better performance in executive functions, as well as those who used placebo had an increase in attention performance and working memory.

Conclusion: The findings suggest that there is no association between the use of Ayahuasca in a single dose and a change in the cognitive pattern, either in healthy individuals or with a diagnosis of MDD, which represents an indication of the efficacy of this substance for the remission of depressive symptoms when dealing with neuropsychological aspects. However, it presented evidence to prove previous studies regarding the cognitive deficit associated in patients with MDD when compared to healthy subjects.
