Objective: The Revised Checkilist Symptom 90 is a self-report instrument for the diagnosis of psychopathological disorders through the measurement of psychological and psychological and psychopathological disorders, in samples of psychiatric patients and the general community. However, there is a lack of agreement in its factorial structure. This study examined aspects of validity and reliability from the oiginal factor structure of SCL 90-R for the cultural context of Brazil. Method: 466 participants from the general population were invited to respond to SCL90-R and a socio-demographic questionnaire. The participants had a mean age of 26.7 years (SD = 7.58, range 16 to 62 years), 63.7% were women, 36.3% were men, and 73% were singles. Results: through an exploratory factorial analysis, different criteria were tried to define the possible number of factors that the measure should present for its Brazilian version. With the method of Factoring of Main Axes, the structure was fixed in eight factors, with rotation Varimax. After this analysis, and the verification of Cronbach's alpha cues, it was possible to identify a structure composed of five factors. Conclusion: an excellent reliability of SCL 90-R is observed, being useful for the evaluation of psychological disorders, however, indicating an instrument with 5 factors instead of nine factors.
