Abstract

Background: Pregnancy configured in a maternal adaptation process characterized by changes in many areas of life. The Lederman Prenatal Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (PSEQ) it is a specific instrument for measuring psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy, developed in English and translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese. The aim of this paper is to analyze the discriminant validity of PSEQ in adults and adolescents pregnant women.

Methods: This is an observational study, an amount which was developed in public prenatal services of a city in Northeast Brazil. We were used to collect data the following instruments: 1) semi-structured questionnaire related to socio-demographic, clinical and obstetrical; 2) PSEQ, consisting of seven areas: "Well-being of mother and baby"; "Pregnancy Acceptance"; "Identification with the maternal role"; "Preparing for labor"; "Control in labor"; "Relationship with the mother" and "Relationship with partner". For confirmation of statistical significance was considered the limit of 5% (p <0.05).

Results: The study sample consisted of 174 pregnant women, grouped in 139 adult (79.88%) and 35 adolescents (20.11%). The psychosocial adaptation can be seen that for six of the seven domains was the highest average of the pregnant adolescents, which is worse adaptation to pregnancy. As for the domain "relationship with partner" this appeared slightly higher among adults. The age of the correlation analysis with the domains of PSEQ were low and negative, but significant, except for the áreas “Relationship with his mother " and "Relationship with fellow " who did not show significance.

Conclusions: The instrument was able to differentiate the different realities experienced by pregnant women, according to the age in which it gives the pregnancy process. Maternal psychosocial adaptation during pregnancy among adolescents is worse when compared to that in adulthood.
