The ballroom culture and community represent a movement of resistance and
celebration for LGBTIAP+ bodies, gender and sexuality dissidents, which emerged in the United States
in the 1970s and reached Brazil around 2014. Known as "cultura de baile" in the Brazilian context, it
stands out for its performative practices, the balls, with extravagant categories and themes, its
aesthetic inventiveness, and its political articulation. This paper narrates the history of the ballroom
community in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, which arrived in the capital, Natal, in 2023, in its
movements of strengthening, consolidation, and resistance. Understanding the importance of the
researcher’s engagement with the field, the work was conducted through ethnocartography, allowing
the researcher to accompany the processes of the RN ballroom community through collaboration with
other individuals involved in the scene. To assist in analyzing the observations in the field and what
was recorded in the field diary, the writing was supported by post-structuralist theories on gender and
sexuality, particularly queer theories and schizoanalysis. The findings of this research highlight the
power of the RN ballroom community as an affirmative life practice. It proposes a safe and caring space
through bonds of affection and friendship, providing support to dissident experiences marginalized by
cisheteronormativity and victims of various forms of violence in other spaces they inhabit. Ballroom
also represents a way to queer LGBTIAP+ experiences by subverting the gender and sexuality norms
of the cisnormative hegemony, reimagining experiences and providing new possibilities for existing in
the world. It is evident that ballroom RN engages with themes such as culture, citizenship, sociability,
class, race, gender, sexuality, and many others. Moreover, the community's efforts bring possibilities
for social transformation for its members and the cultural landscape of the city.
