Since the transfer of patients to hospitals, the role of promoting patient care has been delegated to health professionals. In these places, death is avoided and can be justified by the occurrence of failures and errors. And, in specific health institutions, maternity hospitals, the less is the possibility of death, despite their midlife presence. With the evolution of medicine and the consequent expansion of the techniques and types of equipment to be used, maternities became places equipped with a technological apparatus considered necessary for the maintenance of life, concentrated in a unit of neonatal intensiva therapy. In this context, health professionals, in addition to needing technical knowledge and understanding and compliance with safety protocols, still deal with distress and emotional shock, experiencing death situations and losses in their daily work. In view of the above, the present study aims to understand the experience of professionals working in Neonatal Intensive Care Units. The Maternidade Escola Januário Cicco, reference in the state of Rio Grande do Norte for high risk gestation, was chosen as a field of study. As a methodological orientation was used the heideggerian hermeneutic phenomenology and, as a possibility of listening, the narrative interview. Nine interviews were conducted with health professionals from different backgrounds (doctors, nurses, nursing technicians, psychologists, physiotherapists, social workers). The analysis of the narratives was inspired by the hermeneutic circle proposed by Martin Heidegger in the Analytic of Existence. The interpretations showed the professionals reporting feelings of frustration, impotence, guilt and sadness at the death of newborns. They also point out the difficulties in daily work. There was a need to expand the still incipient projects of attention to health professionals, with the structuring of spaces for psychological counseling and the holding of multidisciplinary meetings in order to promote greater integration among the different professionals. The study also brings reflections to the training institutions in order to institute or expand space in the academy to address the issue of patient death. The importance of this study is precisely in the understanding of the experience of health professionals, in order to generate contributions to the academic community, the hospital institution and, consequently, to the care of patients and their families.
