RESUMO:

In recent years, researches has been highlights that deficits in executive functions (FE) are one of the main features of
the cognitive functioning of children with Down Syndrome (DS). Difficulties are identified in the initiation of activities,
construction of plans and strategies, updating and monitoring of these, maintenance of focus and persistence,
cognitive flexibility, among other aspects. In addition to deficits in EF and in other neuropsychological domains,
children with DS also have problems in adaptive behavior. Together, such impairments negatively impact on their
development and point to the need for the elaboration of intervention programs that seek to stimulate the development
of EFs in this clinical subgroup, since these functions are considered fundamental for the accomplishment of several
activities of our daily life, especially for the learning and school success. In this sense, the present research aims to
adapt to the clinical group of the SD an interventional program of the Executive Functions. In order to achieve this
objective, two studies will be carried out, a previous study: I) Evaluation of executive functions, intellectual functioning
and adaptive behavior of school children with DS; and II) Adaptation of the Program of Intervention in Self-Regulation
and Executive Functions (PIAFEX) for school children with DS. In the previous study (I), participated in the study 32
children diagnosed with DS, aged 7 to 12 years old, of both sexes, attended in the Foundation Integrated Support for
the Person with Disability (FUNAD-PB), as well as their respective parents or guardians. These were assessed
through specific neuropsychological scales and measures. The data collected will be analyzed quantitatively, based on
the scores obtained as well as qualitatively. It should be emphasized that this previous study (I) constituted a
necessary and fundamental stage for the development of the study itself (II), since its results will serve to establish the
executive and behavioral profiles of these children, as well as the level development, and thus support the adaptation
of the proposed intervention program. In relation to study II, initially, a detailed analysis of the modules and activities
that compose PIAFEX was performed, aiming to select them and adapt them to the neuropsychological phenotype of
children with DS. This adaptation is based on previous studies of the literature on this phenotype, as well as results
observed in study I. After the adaptation, the program was sent to expert judges in FE and will also be sent to
specialists judges in the SD, to enable its improvement and / or reformulation. After the synthesis of the evaluation of
the judges, the program will be piloted with a group of six school children with DS, in order to verify their suitability for
this clinical group, that is, level of understanding of the instructions and adequacy of proposed activities. At the end of
this process, the program will be reviewed, and if necessary, made the last adjustments. This research is expected to
make available to the population with DS an inedited intervention program aimed at the stimulation of EFs, a program
specifically developed based on its neuropsychological profile. Therefore, this study may serve as a basis for

subsequent interventions and instrumentalize the work, in the future, of several professionals who work with these
children, either in a clinical context or in a school context.
