The drawing that is made of the semi-arid has become increasingly problematic. It seems to be a
representation of an outsider's imaginary, decontextualized and a-historical. For the human
expressions produced throughout centuries - paintings, music, films, documentaries, novels,
literatures, etc - the semi-arid is all based on the poetics of the beauty of pain. From it appear the
suffering and the abandonment, and its potentialities are diminished. In this cultural ideology,
hegemonically masculinized and adult-centered, few places are left to elderly people and women. In
it, too, a more complicated part is reserved for children. In that recognized cultural expression of the
semiarid, little or nothing remains for childhood. Here and there, there are reports of boys without
names, marked by hunger, destined to die. I understand that this image of the semiarid and the
inclusion of children need to be questioned in the contemporary moment. If the semi-arid was this or
that, at present, other images can be contemplated. Observing this territory from Catingueira - PB, I
have noticed children everywhere, living their childhoods in the soccer field, in the sports court, in
the church, in the middle of the street, in the square, in the public swimming pool, etc. They are
participating in thematic discussions. They are taking part in protests, political campaigns,
processions, mobilizations, parties. They are acting through social networks ... So that even if they
are not found in conflict with laws or involved in acts of social disobedience, a portion of the adult
population is disturbed by their noisy presence, accusing them of bad boys. What does this
accusation mean? What could be learned from her? In my initial understanding this expression
shows a form of childhood, lived in the present day semiarid, where children have won more
constitutional guarantees. And, even though they are not being heard and counted, they are
participating in the destinies of their municipality, in their own way and in their age / developmental
measure. Here I am understanding that every act of participation is a political process. It is a way for
the subject to affirm himself in the world. Thus, for this investigation, participation is occupying and
exposing oneself. It is to make use of the voice, to express an opinion, to express itself, but it is also
to be present, if seen, when the a priori generational invisibility has been decreed as a parameter.
With this work, I intend to elaborate an inclusive ethnography that seeks to contemplate the
presence and participation of children in ordinary life in Catingueirense, stripping the childhood
lived in the semiarid in the contemporary moment. I will describe some of the most common forms of
child participation in Catingueira, showing them as social actors and political protagonists of social
life. I will reveal, throughout the history recounted by Catingueirense memory, how the older
generations lived their childhood, and how childhood became what it is in the municipal present. I
will try to raise some suspicion about secular hegemonic thinking about the semi-arid, starting from
Catingueira. I also intend to show the life of the poor, without making it ugly, without diminishing it
in the elemental vulnerability of the so-called neutral scientific knowledge. This research is being
done in a field where other research has already been carried out since the early 2000s. Following
ethnographic inspiration, I will benefit from all the production undertaken there. However, I will have
based on field experiences during (2012), 2014, 2015 and 2016, with periodic visits in times of
strong parties such as São Sebastião, João Pedro, common time, Carnival, and Time of Politics. I
believe that the reflections made can be a contribution to the methodology of work that seeks to
include children. From a theoretical point of view, I will argue in an interdisciplinary and
multidisciplinary way. I will approach the field of children's and childhood studies. Within this field, I
take a historical and critical perspective on life, society and human realities. And, as a psychologist, I
hope that this work will contribute to the effort made in the field of child studies.
