RESUMO:

The present research combined descriptive approach of social-economic and demographic sample of individuals from the group of unemployed people in the population of the municipality of Macaíba- Natal (RN)-Brazil, and clinical investigation of experiences of unemployment of some of participant individuals. Sociodemographic and individual-clinical aspects were combined in order to deep the comprehension of aspects linked to the unemployment condition, and also the means of getting rid off this condition.  Research was performed with the support of specific public municipal service, dedicated to social assistance to unemployed people; 180 individuals took part in the first descriptive study (27 men and 153 women), most of them (67%) in the condition of unemployment for more than one year.  This first  study was completed by a second clinical-qualitative study, dedicated to explore narrative descriptions of unemployed individuals issued from the same sample. Theoretical tools like individual experiences and power of acting helped in interpretative clinical analysis, both analysis aiming to deep the comprehension of unemployment, ways of by passing this condition and explanation about the difficulties in such a movement. Unemployment is inserted in personal and social biography of the concerned individual, and constitutes a subjective experience emotionally affected. Descriptive analyses was based on statistical treatment of data issued from treatment of frequencies of responses; clinical analysis were based on clinical-interpretative data from individual narratives about their condition of unemployment. Multidimensional descriptive cluster analysis allowed to detect two clusters (groups), shifted by the dominant presence (cluster 1) or absence (cluster 2) of believing in being able to come back to formal labor engagement. This shifting, however, could be better explained in terms of other aspects, namely those ones linked to women familiar tasks and responsibilities.
