SUMMARY:

Recent research in urban ecology has focused on vacant urban spaces, understanding them as valuable places for biodiversity. For this reason, improving green infrastructure through landscape design is crucial, given the positive effects on urban resilience in a scenario of environmental changes. This research aims to develop strategies for creating new green spaces in Mossoró, a Brazilian semi-arid city, based on the study of the potential for conversion of urban vacant spaces into green areas and the resistance to human movement in the landscape. For this, multicriteria analysis in a GIS environment was used to create a suitability map for conversion and a resistance surface map. The method includes the integration of the variables urban planning, urban density, urban occupation stage, urban voids and land cover and their conditioning factors, obtaining a map of priority areas. Suitability was assessed as very low (0.03-0.22), low (0.23-0.42), medium (0.43-0.61), high (0.62-0.80) and very high (0.81-1). In the urban area, 129 hectares are considered highly suitable for conversion into green spaces. The variables were combined to create the resistance surface: highways, public lighting, elementary, middle and high schools, bus stops, squares, health centers and hospitals. The resistance surface presented values between 212 and 1000. Areas with more public facilities and services, such as high-urban planning areas, offered less resistance to human flow in the landscape, favoring the random walk of humans and other organisms. These areas are a priority for biodiversity conservation and regional planning.
