AREA: Recursos Florestais e Engenharia Florestal
SUBÁREA: Conservação da Natureza
SUMMARY:

The Caatinga biome has, throughout its territory, an expressive variation in relation to its physiognomy and floristics, which occurs due to environmental factors, such as rainfall, altitude, temperature, among others. Thus, the objective of the present study was to conduct a phytosociological survey of adult woody individuals in three areas of Caatinga on the same soil class, at different altitude levels, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. For the vegetation sampling, plots of 30 x 10 m (300 m²) were systematically plotted in two areas, where Area 1 is located in Mossoró/RN and Area 2 in Severiano Melo. All shrubby-woody individuals with circumference at breast height ≥ 6 cm were included. The species were estimated in the field with the help of a local woodsman and classified to the family level. As a result, a total of 384 shrubby-arboreal individuals were inventoried, 145 in area 1 and 239 in area 2. A total of 17 species belonging to 9 botanical families were identified. The species that occurred most frequently in area 1 were Auxemma glazioviana, Pytirocarpa moniliformis Benth. and Bauhinia cheilantah (Bong.) Steud, while in area 2 were Croton blanchetianus, Mimosa tenuiflora (Mart.) Benth and Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.). The three species that presented the highest value of importance (VI) in area 1 were Auxemma glazioviana, followed by Pytirocarpa moniliformis Benth. and Piptadenia stipulacea (Benth.), while in area 2 were Mimosa tenuiflora (Mart.) Benth, Croton blanchetianus and Combretum leprosum. In relation to the diversity estimated by the Shannon Index (H'), the value of 2.33 nats.ind-1 was found for area 1 and 1.78 nats.ind-1 in area 2, while for Pielou's Equitability (J) the estimated value was 0.84 for area 1 and 0.66 for area 2. In the cluster analysis, it was observed in the dendrogram that, considering the cut-off line of approximately 90% dissimilarity, the formation of two distinct floristic groups was observed. These results showed that the dry forest fragments studied showed similar values to other studies in the Northeastern semi-arid region, but among themselves the fragments had floristic and structural differences, as well as differences in diversity indices.
