RESUMO:

Activated carbon is an important product, used in several areas, with the most diverse applications, among them we can highlight its environmental application, acting in the remediation of impacts caused by industries, among others. Eucalyptus urograndis, activated with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2) and nitric acid (HNO 3), was used as a general objective to test and characterize them in the removal of heavy metals in aqueous medium, carrying out the thermodynamic study of the adsorption process. Wood discs of a five - year - old Eucalyptus grandis x Eucalyptus urophylla hybrid were used to make the carbonizations. After charring, charcoal received two types of activations. Part of the material was activated on a magnetic stirrer at 80 ° C for 4 hours using 30% Hydrogen Peroxide. The other part of the material was taken to the 2 liter glass flask in an exhaust hood, where 40 g of crushed charcoal and 300 g of nitric acid were added at 12.5% concentration. Then, the characterization of the coals (TG-DTG, XRD, SEM) was carried out. Afterwards, Cu (II) adsorption kinetics were performed in aqueous medium using a synthetic solution. of the mass of the adsorbents. Finally, the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were prepared. The adsorbent activated with H2O2 reached the adsorption equilibrium with only 30 seconds, in this system tested, while the adsorbent activated with HNO3 reached the balance with 30 min. The ideal mass of adsorbent found was 0.4 g for both activated carbon with H 2 O 2 and for that activated with HNO 3. The ideal adsorption pH of the solution found was 5 for both. The total adsorption capacity of the adsorbent activated with H2O2 was equal to 170.41 mg.g-1 for the experimental values and 169.49 mg.g-1 for the value calculated by the Langmuir model, whereas for the activated carbon with HNO3, the values of 217.39 mg.g-1 and 211.25 mg.g-1 for the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model and experimental, respectively. The adsorption isotherm model that applied the most was Langmuir, for both adsorbents, with a correlation coefficient equal to 0.9976 and 0.9955, for activated carbon with H2O2 and HNO3, respectively. Eucalyptus urograndis carbons activated with both H2O2 and HNO3 proved to be efficient for removal of heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Activation caused morphological changes in charcoal, favoring its adsorption capacity.
