Caatinga is being explored in accelerated way in recent years due mainly to the consumption of firewood for domestic and industrial purposes. Knowledge about root system, especially the behavior of fine roots under different farming methods, is important to understand the physiological behavior of the aerial tree portion, especially regarding to mineral nutrition and water balance of the tree. Acacia mangium and Mimosa caesalpiniifolia are species able to thrive in poor soil, have rapid growth and are widely used in the recovery of degraded areas. The present study aimed to evaluate the growth and distribution of fine roots of both species after 12 and 48 months, under two farming methods. The experiment was conducted in a complete randomized block design with two treatments (methods A and B) and four replications, considering three depths (0 – 20, 20 – 40 e 40 – 60 cm) and three sampling positions (row, between the row and diagonal). For both treatments and for both species the highest density of fine roots was found in the top layer of soil (0-20 cm), having a trend to reduce as depth increased at 12 months for acacia and thrush and at 48 months only for acacia. The addition of manure, triple superphosphate, limestone and the achievement of grooves favored the vertical production and distribution of fine roots for the first 12 months of age in both species, already at 48 months of Acacia old root growth was similar in two methods of both the more intensive and less intensive.
