SUMMARY:

Butterflies, in addition to being ecologically important and charismatic, are excellent bioindicators due to their relatively short life cycle, sensitivity to microhabitats, and the fact that the frugivorous guild is considered easy to sample. In Brazil, the Northeast region still lacks butterfly collections, with significant gaps in taxonomic (DL) and distributional (DW) knowledge. Both are considered impediments to species conservation. Rio Grande do Norte is located within the Caatinga and on the northern edge of the Atlantic Forest, in northeastern Brazil. The objectives of this study were: i) to inventory the butterfly fauna of Rio Grande do Norte, compiling records and suggesting and conducting collections in sampling gaps; and ii) to produce an annotated checklist of butterflies occurring in Rio Grande do Norte, comprising biological information on the Papilionidae and Pieridae families. Collections were made in the Açu National Forest (FLONA), a conservation unit in the Caatinga. In total, 3,155 specimens were analyzed, belonging to 192 species identified for the state. The current list includes 65 new species records, representing a 51% increase over the previous count. Among them are two new records for the Pernambuco Endemism Center: Periplacis menander (Stoll, 1780) and Eurytides telesilaus (C. Felder & R. Felder, 1864). The rare species Strymon cestri (Reakirt, [1867]) is also among the new records. The Agreste Region of RN was identified as a priority for collections, taking into account the region’s biological importance, high DL, and its role as a contact zone between domains. Based on the presented figures and a comparison with the literature, the nectarivorous guild was identified as the one with the greatest deficit in taxonomic information. In FLONA, 2,034 individuals distributed across 45 species were recorded. The species Sertania lambedor (P. Jauffret, J. Jauffret & Pessôa, 2008) was recorded for the first time and, to date, has been collected exclusively in FLONA. Species richness was higher during the rainy season, confirming the trend for the Caatinga. Diagnostic criteria, occurrence data, seasonality, and diagnostic images were developed for 18 species (n=13 for Pieridae; n=5 for Papilionidae).
