Dragonflies of Brazilian Extreme Northeast: checklist and distribution
Odonata, Biological collections, Faunistic inventory, Rio Grande do Norte.
The order Odonata comprises a group of aquatic insects commonly known as dragonflies and damselflies. Brazil registers over 860 species of odonates, the highest diversity in the Neotropical region. Knowledge about the group is assimetrical across the country. Taxonomic and distribution data for the order in the Northeast are still quite scarce, resulting in gaps of basic information. The Rio Grande do Norte state (RN) does not have a list of odonate species and records only 4 species in its territory. This study aimed to produce the first species list for the order Odonata in RN and provide information about their distribution. The data used to elaborate the list were obtained through the analysis of 2,570 specimens deposited in the Adalberto Antônio Varela-Freire Entomological Collection (UFRN – CEAAVF) and literature records. So far, 40 species have been recorded in the state territory, distributed across 7 families and 28 genera. Thirty species are new records for the state, and 10 were previously recorded in publications. Distribution data of species were found for 33 municipalities in RN, with most records located in Serra Negra do Norte, where the Seridó Ecological Station is located, the main locality for collecting specimens deposited in UFRN-CEAAVF. The results reveal a previously unknown diversity for the state, in line with the species lists of neighboring states. Moreover, they highlight the need to expand sampling efforts, especially in the central, western, and agreste mesoregions of the state, and emphasize the importance of conservation areas and the involvement of academic and student collaborators.
