SUMMARY:

Fungi are key to the well-being of our planet's environments, due to their key role in ecosystems. Places like Brazil have several hotspots that are intensively degraded due to deforestation. This leads to potential losses of groups in the region that have not yet been identified. One of these groups with potential habitat loss is the Cyathus Haller genus, present in the nidulareacea family, which has as one of its characteristics a shape similar to an inverted bell. Some species of the Cyathus genus are endemic to these threatened areas. These species were previously believed to be present in more areas, but recent studies with other metrics have shown the opposite, due to inconsistencies in past identifications. This highlights the importance of herbaria in accumulating data on groups and preserving specimens over time so that new analyses can be performed with the materials. Therefore, this study sought to collect samples from strategic locations to increase data on this group and reevaluate samples at the genus level or with incomplete data, in order to understand the diversity of the group through materials deposited in biological collections, complemented with more current morphological characters proposed in recent articles. Thus, helping to reduce gaps in these specimens. It was possible to observe an increase in the number of species deposited in the UFRN-Fungi collection, based on materials that were only at the genus level. Some of these species previously had only a single known record, expanding knowledge of the group in regions with scarcity of information, such as the states of Ceará and Rio Grande do Norte. At the same time, it was possible to establish a standard for better conservation of these specimens in the collections, with the aim of greater longevity of the deposited materials.
