SUMMARY:

The family Geastraceae Corda comprises the genera Geastrum Pers. and Myriostoma Desv., forming a monophyletic group. Its representatives are characterized by producing angiocarpic basidiomes (covered germinative part) in a star shape, popularly known as "earth star" for the genus Geastrum and "pepper pot earth star" for Myriostoma. The genus Geastrum includes approximately 140 recorded species, with 75 of them found in Brazil. The genus Myriostoma, previously considered monospecific, now encompasses six identified species. The lack of taxonomic knowledge about the Geastraceae family has been addressed in recent studies, which have revealed cryptic species and species complexes. Discoveries like these impact the general understanding of species already deposited in biological collections, such as the Fungal Collection of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN-Fungos), where new findings expand both the knowledge and the number of specimens stored in collections. To enhance the understanding of the species and their distribution in the UFRN-Fungos Collection, a review of the deposited materials was conducted. This collection houses many representatives from the genera Geastrum and Myriostoma. Morphological analyses were performed on 215 exsiccata specimens deposited in the collection, which were either identified only at the genus level or classified as part of established species complexes, such as the Geastrum schweinitzii and Geastrum hirsutum complexes. The morphological analysis followed the standard methodology for the genera, and identifications were based on specialized literature. As a result, 13 species of the genus Geastrum were identified, along with three new records for the genus Myriostoma. Additionally, molecular analyses of selected specimens of interest were conducted, generating 10 new sequences. This study aims to increase knowledge about the biodiversity of materials in biological collections, providing a foundation for future studies and making these data accessible to the scientific community through publication in articles, the development of taxonomic keys for the analyzed taxa, and updates to databases.
