SUMMARY:

Suicidal behavior is associated with a combination of individual and situational factors. At the individual level, mental disorders such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance abuse play a central role. In the social context, socioeconomic inequalities, limited access to healthcare services, economic crises, and public health emergencies significantly contribute to this phenomenon. In Brazil, studies indicate an increase in reported suicide attempts and suicide cases over the past decade. This trend is observed across different age groups, socioeconomic contexts, and regions, highlighting its complexity and relevance as a public health issue.Gender is a determining factor in the analysis of suicidal behavior, reflecting the so-called "suicide and gender paradox." Men and women exhibit this behavior differently, influenced by traditional social constructs. In this context, the present study aims to analyze the temporal trend of suicide attempt and suicide rates in Brazil between 2014 and 2023, considering gender, age group, region, and method used.To achieve this objective, an ecological time-trend study will be conducted, including individuals aged 10 years and older. Suicide data will be obtained from the Mortality Information System (SIM/DATASUS), while suicide attempt data will be sourced from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN/DATASUS). Suicide attempt and suicide notification rates per 100,000 inhabitants will be calculated and stratified by gender, age group, region, and method. Rates will be standardized using the direct method, with the 2022 Census population as the reference.Time-trend analysis will be performed using Prais-Winsten regression, which adjusts for serial autocorrelation in time series data. Based on this model, the Annual Percentage Change (APC) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals will be estimated. Statistical analyses will be conducted using R software (version 4.4.1), employing the tsModel, gls, splines, vcd, ggplot2, and tidyverse packages, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05.Preliminary results indicate that suicide attempt rates are higher among women, whereas completed suicides are more frequent among men. Gender differences were also observed regarding the methods used. Additionally, exploratory analysis suggests an increasing trend in suicide attempt notifications and suicide rates across all studied regions.
