KEY WORDS:

PAGES: 92
BIG AREA: Ciências Sociais Aplicadas
AREA: Demografia
SUMMARY:

The field of population estimates and projections goes beyond its formal dimension in demographic science, becoming increasingly relevant for territorial planning and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among the various characteristics of this field of study, the improvement of methods that seek to reflect the complex dynamics of populations and their challenges stands out, ensuring that analyses remain updated and applicable to the constantly changing social realities. In this context, there is great potential in creating estimates based on symptomatic variables, such as vital statistics, school enrollments, the number of voters, and consumption of basic services, to create models capable of associating population changes with variations observed in these indicators. Similarly, spatial information, such as nightlight data, urban land-use classification, street networks, and satellite imagery, has gained prominence in the field of population estimates. Through statistical correlations and combinations of variables, it is possible to capture recent trends and adapt projections to local dynamics. As a strategic region that brings together multiple socio-territorial realities, an essential element for studying frontier methodologies in the field of estimates, the Legal Amazon serves as the spatial focus of this research project, whose main question is: what are the potentials and challenges in using geospatial data integrated with administrative records in ratio correlation models to estimate municipal populations in the Legal Amazon? From this question, the expected outcomes aim to highlight the potential of geospatial data to improve the accuracy of population estimates in the region, as well as its applicability in other similar geographic contexts. The study also seeks to identify technical and methodological challenges, such as data quality and periodicity, as well as difficulties in applying them to low population density areas. Finally, the goal is to develop models based on spatial data and administrative records to assess their effectiveness in producing post-census estimates for small areas, considering different land uses and occupations, emphasizing the relevance of these results in territorial management.
