Migration; Historical Demography; Large Northern River; 1872 Census.
It presents the sociodemographic characteristics of foreigners (immigrants) present in the province of Rio Grande do Norte in the 1872 census. Based on historical demography, it analyzes the migration component, where the following variables: sex, age, professions, civil status, whether free or slave are analyzed. It shows, through a historical and geographical analysis of the divisions of municipalities in Rio Grande do Norte and using the Qgis software, the possible territorial dimension of each parish registered in the province and in which of them the foreigners were located. In addition to analyzing them one by one regarding their native and foreign population, classifying them by quantity and nationalities. It makes a quantitative comparison of foreigners present in other northeastern provinces, as well as people from other provinces of Brazil present in Rio Grande do Norte. It uses migration measures to define the percentage of foreigners (immigrants) and understand the province's migration dynamics, such as migration balance, gross migration, net migration rate and the migration efficiency index. The research sources were acquired through the IBGE database, where files relating to the 1872 census for all provinces of Brazil are digitized.
