AFTER BARS: EXECUTION FROM THE PRISON SYSTEM OF RIO GRANDE DO NORTE AND THE WORK OF THE ESCRITÓRIO SOCIAL

This work deals with the situation of ex-prisoners from the Rio Grande do Norte prison system assisted by the Social Office. Anyone who spent some time in prison and was released definitively, for a period of one year after leaving prison, or conditionally, is considered to have been released from the prison system. The Social Office is a public facility, with shared management between the Judiciary and Executive Powers, which welcomes and directs prison inmates and their families to existing public policies. The aim here, in general, is to analyze the work of the Social Office in Rio Grande do Norte and its effects on the lives of those released from the prison system. Furthermore, it is intended to examine the profile of graduates monitored by the Social Office in the state; investigate the relationship between graduates and elements such as stigma, family, work, religion and social networks; understand the life trajectory of graduates assisted by the Social Office; and, finally, verify the effects of the Social Office's work on criminal recidivism. Since this work analyzes prison inmates as a social category, discussions cover the consequences that prison brings to inmates; by the moment of release from prison and its meanings; the concept of social reintegration and criminal recidivism; the emergence of support programs in Brazil; and the work of the Social Office in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The research is constructed through a bibliographical review of studies related to prison, public security, crime, social control and social reintegration, in addition to official documents, such as reports and resolutions; semi-structured interviews with the team of professionals from the Social Offices are also included; in-depth interviews with prison inmates and their families; non-participant observation and, finally, the analysis of documents produced by the Offices – such as reports, files, graphs or photos.
