SUMMARY:

Respiratory disease is a pathology of widespread hospitalization in Brazil, being an important cause of illness and death, especially among children and the elderly. There is a consensus in the literature that respiratory diseases are very sensitive to the variability of air temperature and, consequently, of thermal comfort indexes, taking into consideration the variety of individual and environmental risk factors and changes in meteorological elements. Respiratory diseases are the most recurrent in relation to temperature changes that, when a little higher, impact more directly on the breathing pattern. Inhaling warmer air than desired generates inflammatory patterns in the body, increasing a little the volume of secretion in the bronchi and pulmonary canaliculi. And this leaves us more predisposed to the action of viruses and bacteria. The present study aims to analyze the spatial pattern of reported cases of respiratory diseases in municipalities of the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil. Furthermore, we intend to draw a typology of vulnerability to respiratory diseases, using the tool of the Grade of Membership (GoM). The study will consider the incidence rates of respiratory disease notification rates, thermal comfort indexes, climate extremes indicators, socio-demographic variables and health infrastructure conditions, to compose this typology.  Several sources of information will be used: 1) Xavier et al. (2015) for meteorological data; 2) Mortality Information System (SIM), 3) SUS Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), 4) National Register of Health Establishments (CNES), 5) coverage of the Family Health Strategy (ESF); 6) Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and 7) United Nations Development Program (UNDP) for sociodemographic information. The work will aim to study the behavior of respiratory diseases in relation to climate variables, indicators of climate extremes, taking into account socio-demographic factors and thermal comfort in the municipalities of the Northeast and Southeast, the study will be useful for health surveillance in relation to the occurrence of respiratory diseases.
