At present it is recognized that the melting of tropical glaciers is a problem
in South America, due to the rapid response of the glaciers to the changes
observed in recent decades. In Peru, there is the Vilcanota mountain range,
being the most important mountain range of the southern region of Peru, since in this area it is located
the largest tropical ice cap of the earth (Quelccaya). The water resource that is born in
The Vilcanota mountain range comes from the water of the Urubamba river valley, being
importance of developing an intensive agriculture, besides which, in the course of the
Urubamba is the hydroelectric plant of Machupicchu, an important energy supplier of
region. In this sense, the objective of this work is to measure the water contribution of the glaciers
in the Vilcanota mountain range located in Peru and identifying possible changes in the
of ice cover. For the present study, we consider images obtained by
remote sensing in the last 30 years, covering the period between 1984 and 2016, with the
In order to quantify the area of the glaciers, we will use the Naive Bayes algorithm.
As a next step, we will use the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), with
which objective is to estimate the flow from the melting of the Vilcanota basin.
As initial results, a setback was identified in the set of glaciers belonging to the
Vilcanota mountain range, including the Quelccaya ice cap. In which between the years of 1985 and
2016 the ice cover presented a loss of 61.61 km2 .. On the other hand, noting the
Quelccaya cap, the results indicated that in the same period, there was a loss of
15.31 km2 of ice cover in the shell. In addition, it was verified that the region with lower
(<5000 meters) contributed to the greater loss of ice cover, while
area (> 5300 meters.) showed stability or slight increase in
during the analysis period. A study of these approaches in
glaciers, will allow a more precise follow-up on their alterations, becoming
valuable information for the community in the region and help in decision-making.
