RESUMO:

This work aimed to characterize particulate matter suspended in the air at a representative site of the Açu Valley exposed to biomass burning emissions, where the total particulate matter should be quantified through gravimetric analysis, chemical composition and morphological analyses of the particulate matter by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) equipped with X-ray Dispersive Energy Detectors.  The Açu Valley is located in the western part of the state, has an economy focused on agriculture (fruit growing for export), livestock and mainly ceramics and oil industries. The samples were collected at the Federal Institute of Science and Technology Education of Rio Grande do Norte, Ipanguaçu campus, for a period of two months (May 25, 2016 to June 25, 2016 and November 1-30, 2016), each month referring to the dry and humid season, respectively. For the collection, two samplers were used, one of a particulate matterup to a diameter of 10 μg (AGV-MP10), available only for the month of June, and another one of total suspended particles (HANDI-VOL), used for the two periods of the campaign. The samples were collected in accordance with the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), described for the Large Volume Sampler (AGV) and Total Suspended Particles (PTS). Subsequently, the gravimetric analysis was performed, calculating the mass concentration of this material through the difference between the mass of the filter before and aftersampling. In June, PTS concentrations varied between 146, 05 μg / m3 and 29,89 μg / m3, although in the first three days of samples there was interference concerning the land-use near the sampling site. The values referring to the PTS concentrations in each day sampled for the month of June reveal that no value was higher than the primary standard stipulated by CONAMA that is 240μg / m3 for a sample time of 24 hours. In November, PTS concentrations ranged from 44.75 μg / m 3 to 81.25 μg / m 3. The daily averages of PM10 concentrations for the month of June show that in four days, the daily air quality standard established by the World Health Organization (WHO) was 50 μg / m³ on May 25 ( 86.48 μg / m3), 26/05 (81.78 μg / m3), 27/07 (66.64 μg / m3) and 07/06 (54.34 μg / m3). The numbers obtained also show that the concentrations are lower than the air quality standard established by CONAMA 03/90 of 150μg / m3 for daily average with 24 hour sampling, the sampling site did not reach the value established by the organ on any day. SEM analysis showed images of soot and volatile ashes from industrial sources, as well as structures in the form of agglomerates and particles of plate type morphology. It was possible to identify with SEM / EDS that particles with chemical composition of higher concentration were present in the filters: S, K, Si, Al, Cl, Fe, Ba, Ca, Na, Mg and Zn. The air masses for this analyzed day are moving in the preferred Northwest direction. The HYSPLIT model was used to carry out the simulations of dispersion and deposition of the particulate material on 01/06 and 22/06 in order to know the trajectory of these pollutants in the atmosphere.
