SUMMARY:

This research investigates how cinema can be understood as a practice of place. Based on the experience in the riverside community of Porto do Capim, in João Pessoa (PB), the concept of Cinema of Place is formulated to analyze how subjects, their links with space, and narrative and aesthetic strategies intertwine in the construction of meanings based on the idea of “topophilia” (Tuan, 2012). From an experiential perspective (Tuan, 1983), the question is: how are films produced based on experiences and emotional links with space, so that these production practices (mode of production of place) are aligned with the community’s agendas and enable its affirmation as a subject inscribed in the audiovisual work? The general objective of the study is to develop a proposal for a mode of production that observes the filmmaking process from the geographic/physical space and the idea of place, aiming at a filmmaking that is conscious and committed to place. The following specific objectives were defined: (1) to construct a concept that encompasses the filmic process based on place; (2) to describe a methodological path for making cinema from place; and (3) to systematize an analytical approach called filmic analysis of place. The concept of Cinema of Place is based on three fundamental elements — Place, Subject and Affectivities —, anchored in theoretical references such as Tuan (1983, 2012), Milton Santos (1978, 1979, 1982, 1985, 2000), Stuart Hall (2003, 2005, 2016), Dussel (1993, 2016) and Antônio Bispo dos Santos (2017, 2023). The systematization of the method was carried out through experience in the community, in which we sought to conduct the process in a more horizontal way, with interests and agendas negotiated with local agents. The film analysis of place was developed based on empirical knowledge and reflection on different analytical approaches, proposing a sensitive and/or
symbolic position of the researcher in relation to the place – whether through physical presence or through documentary and media investigations. As a practical application of the proposal, three works produced in Porto do Capim were proven: Point to faith – or all the songs of my life (2020), Cumadre Fulorzinha (2020) and Mimi-Cuba (2021). The selection followed the saturation criterion and considered different formats for applying Cinema de
Lugar in this community. The research describes a methodological path that covers everything from the first contact with the territory to the screening of the film. Initially, the film analysis is anchored in models suggested by Penafria (2019) and Aumont and Marie (2003, 2013). Subsequently, it adopts a relational and interdisciplinary approach, which requires a displacement to the place/community — physical or symbolic — by the researcher. The thesis
resulting from this study shows that the construction of films of place offers more possibilities to ensure the presence of communities both in the narrative and in the filmmaking process, ensuring that their inscription occurs in an autonomous and conscious manner. It is concluded that the production of cinema of place, based on the idea of place and topophilia, especially in traditional groups, contributes to the sensitive production of films, to the strengthening of Brazilian modes of production and to the development of cinematographic epistemologies of
the global South axis.
