SUMMARY:

Sexuality has long been one of the central stages of debate in various fields and social segments, with an emphasis on homosexuality, historically treated as “abject” and “profane” by Christian conservatism, which uses its religious institutions as structures of power and control to tame dissident bodies. From this perspective, the present study aimed to investigate how anal incarceration is discursively constructed in the media, analyzing its framing as a device for regulating sexuality within the Catholic Church. To this end, the research is based on theoretical intersections, mobilizing the conceptions of corporeality and erotics of Antonin Artaud (1974), Michel Foucault (2008) and Georges Bataille (2021), moving through inferences of gender, sexuality, coloniality and media based on Judith Butler (2019) and Maria Lugones (2020). Incorporating the theoretical contributions of Paul Preciado (2022), Javier Sáez, Sejo Carrascosa (2016) and Leo Bersani (1987) on anality, transgression and countersexuality. The method adopted was archeogenealogy, divided into three stages, namely: the elaboration of an archaeology of the ass; the construction of a genealogy of anal imprisonment and dogmas reflected in the media; and, finally, the proposition of an erotics of the ass. The unit of analysis was the X platform (formerly Twitter), where titles, headlines and comments were examined, in an observational analysis combined with Foucaultian-inspired Discourse Analysis (Foucault, 1996). The results showed that anal imprisonment is discursively carried out in the Catholic Church and operated in the media through mechanisms of sensationalism, stigmatization and intensification of the dissonance between identity and religious function. The discourses, by exploring cases involving homoerotic practices by priests, feed widespread distrust towards the clergy and sustain an image of institutional hypocrisy, where desire, as an inherent drive to existence, is masked, criminalized and pathologized. The media impact not only exposes the internal contradictions of the Church, but reinforces and increases the historical mechanisms of moral surveillance, reaffirming the symbolic prison imposed on deviant bodies. The media, by amplifying such narratives under sensationalist frames, re-actualizes the contemporary inquisitorial logic, where the desire to give one's ass remains interdicted between scandal and punishment, configuring a spectacle of control and collective shame.
