SUMMARY:

Agave sisalana Perrine (sisal) is a plant extensively cultured in Caatinga. Fiber
production is the main objective. Only 5 % to 6 % of leaf’s crude weight are used in the
defibration process resulting in a considerable amount byproduct, which is often
dropped in the ground. The chemical composition and different activities already were
found in extracts developed from sisal byproduct, which motivated the development of
new extracts and search for new activities. The aim of this study was to develop a
multifunctional bioingredient with applicability in the cosmetics industry from the
industrial byproduct of A. sisalana. Initially, the sisal byproduct was collected and
subsequently dried. Two different extraction methods were performed, using a Soxhlet
apparatus and pressurized liquid resulting in eighteen extracts, nine from each
extraction method. Total tannins and diosgenin quantification were performed on the
extracts that showed the highest crude yield after extraction and drying. The extract
obtained by Soxhlet was chosen for the following evaluations, which was prepared
using 30 % ethanol in 8 hours of extraction and had a crude yield of 8.07 %. In this
extract, tannins, flavonoids and saponins were identified. In the in vivo safety
assessment, the extract shown to be safe for use on human skin. In the in vitro
evaluation of antioxidant activity, the extract showed DPPH radical scavenging activity
(IC50 = 1.888124 mg/mL) and ABTS•+ radical scavenging activity (IC50 = 371.37 µg/mL).
Total antioxidant capacity was 18.55±0.33 Eq.mg of ascorbic acid/g of extract, in
addition to presenting the capacity to chelate Cu2+ and Fe2+. In the antityrosinase
activity evaluation, the extract presented approximately 10% inhibition, but the
evaluation occurred in the concentration of 10 mg/mL. In this context, the use of the A.
sisalana by-product to develop a new multifunctional bioingredient for the cosmetics
industry can contribute to minimizing environmental impacts and to the socioeconomic
development of regions that produce sisal fibers.
