SUMMARY:

We are in the decade of ecosystem restoration and, as a goal, we need to reverse the advance of the degradation of natural environments, aiming at sustainable development and ensuring human well-being. To achieve this goal, we must think about the restoration of dryland environments, such as the Caatinga that presents great floristic diversity and endemism. For this, we must understand which species and community compositions can ensure greater success in restoration projects. The objective of this work was to identify species and communities that present a good potential for restoration in the Caatinga. We analysed a five-year period of the BrazilDry experiment located in Açú National Forest (Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil) implemented in 2016. We isolated the first cohort of the 16 planted species to do the actual and average survival percentage, average height and growth, average photosynthesizing biomass accumulation and average diameter at soil height (DAS) of each species and of the 45 compositions assembled in the experiment. We found that at least 10 species showed an average survival rate between 80-50% after five years. Most species did not exceed 1.5m in height and grew between 0.00-0.25m. M. tenuiflora was the standout in photosynthesizing biomass production and DAS, with respective values of 200g and around 30mm. About the compositions, 20 presented survival above 50%, 11 presented height between 1.5-2.0m, 7 presented average growth between 0.25-0.50m, most of the compositions presented biomass production below 100g. Despite the success of some species in survival, we cannot affirm that the cohorts reached a stability in their mortality.
