SUMMARY:

Feather moulting in birds is a natural process that occurs in the annual life cycle of all species due to the wear and tear of old feathers, requires great energy expenditure and availability of sufficient resources for it to occur and generally does not coincide with other energy costly activities, such as reproduction and migration. Factors such as primary productivity and rainfall can help us better understand how this cycle takes place. We sought to analyze whether there is an influence of productivity, precipitation and reproduction on feather moulting, and whether there is a difference in moulting between diets. We used a database of CLBI collections between 2010 and 2014. We counted the presence or absence of wing, tail, body molting and simultaneous wing, tail and body molt. We also account for the presence or absence of brood patch. We separated the species into four groups of diets: Fruits, Invertebrates, Invertebrates/Fruits and Omnivore. We made GLM models to analyze which variable best explained the seedling variation, and simple linear regressions to analyze the correlation between the seedling and the studied variables. The results show that feather molting is more influenced by NDVI, as a temporal factor, and by the type of molting, as a biological factor. We have also seen that there is no significant difference in molting patterns between diets. Also, the moulting and breeding period do not overlap.
