SUMMARY:

The ponds's natural productivity plays an important role in shrimp nutrition and in keeping the environmental quality of crops. Debris and Planktonic and benthic organisms are pointed out as the main nutritional sources for shrimp. The present study evaluated the relative contribution of natural food sources and commercial feeds to the development of Litopenaeus vannamei on semi-intensive farms with low salinity water. Stable isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen was used to test the hypothesis that natural sources contribute to the development of shrimp cultivated under these conditions. The contribution was estimated through a mixture model using the isotopic signature of the samples of shrimp, commercial feed, sediment and seston, in addition to the discriminant factors of the sources. The results indicate that in phase I of cultivation (30 days) the natural diets correspond to about 50% of the shrimp muscle tissue, in phase II (60 days) the feed proved to be the main source for development (73%) followed by sediment (13%) and seston (8%). Elevation of chlorophyll and alteration of the zooplanktonic community between phases were observed. The difference in contributions is associated to changes in shrimp feeding behavior, environmental conditions and availability of natural food. The results of this study show the importance of an integrated approach that includes natural food sources for marine shrimp in more sustainable low-salinity semi-intensive farming.
