RESUMO:

The worldwide biodiversity decline due to anthropogenic causes raises the necessity to ponder the effects this phenomenon has on the functioning of ecosystems. The ecosystemic processes are ruled by environmental and biological factors, among which the relationships between quality and magnitude of an ecosystem process and the biodiversity are called Biodiversity Effects on ecosystem Functioning (BEF). Within the theoretical background of BEF, species selection and complementarity effects amplify the local community on capturing and decomposing biological and inorganic resources, as with its ability to produce biomass and physically structure the environment. Traditionally these effects have been observed on controlled experiments, however, a growing number of papers have observed these effects on natural environments with observational studies. The aim of this thesis is to analyze BEF on lake ecosystems. The taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity of the phytoplankton and the zooplankton, as well as the lake morphometric data and lake environmental conditions were analyzed and its effects on Resource Use Efficiency (RUEzp – Zooplanctonic Biomass: Phytoplanktonic Biomass for zooplâncton community and RUEpp – Phytoplanktonic Biomass: Total Phosphorus for phytoplankton) on 98 lakes on Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. Next, BEF was analysed with beta functional, phylogenetic and taxonomic diversities, within lakes and within basins to assess the effect of dissimilarity over RUE. Biodiversity effects varied between components of biodiversity, with phylogenetic diversity being the most proeminent.
