RESUMO:

Macroalgae are engineers of ecosystems, increasing their complexity and serving as shelter, food, and surface settlement for marine organisms. However, when in high biomass, macroalgae compromise the ecosystem functions and services, promoting the release of toxins and decreasing the availability of oxygen in the environment. Consequently, they cause negative effects on the macrofauna, mainly in the benthic organisms. These effects tend to impact the fishing activities, fish, and fishers, that is, they cause environmental and socioeconomic concerns. The present study aims to: (1) analyze the effects of macroalgae on the shrimps of economic interest and bycatch of the artisanal shrimp fishery in the eastern and semi-arid regions of the Rio Grande do Norte state (2) evaluate the abundance of the macroalgae Ulva lactuca in the estuarine region of the Piranhas-Açu basin, addressing the history of blooms and socioeconomic impacts related to the local fisher community. Every two months, trawlings by boat were carried out in two coastal regions of the state, and monitoring of the abundance of macroalgae and water quality in the estuarine region. Also, semi-structured interviews were applied to address the ecological knowledge of fishers related to macroalgae. (1) The shrimp production proved to be advantageous in the eastern coast of the state, where low biomass of macroalgae, high rainfall, and fine sediments rich in organic matter occur. In the coastal semi-arid, however, there was low abundance of shrimps and high biomass of algae. In areas with higher biomass and richness of algae, the shrimps exhibit lower diversity and higher dominance, and the bycatch had its density favored in the northern coast. (2) The high biomass of algae, which were concentrated upstream of the estuary, were positively related to nutrient concentration, greater water transparency, and lower hydrodynamics, common factors encountered during long dry periods, favoring photosynthetic respiration and development of macroalgae. The ecological knowledge held by the local fishers provided us a better understanding of the history of estuarine blooms and their impacts on fishing, with the nets and gears being the most impacted, and the catch of fishes impaired at the time of bloom. We also discussed the possibles uses for the macroalgae mats aiming to control the blooms.
