RESUMO:

Knowing the situation of fish stocks is essential for the management and maintenance of fishing. However, in Brazil little is known about most stocks, even those of interest to small-scale fisheries. In the absence of this information, historical surveys through interviews with fishermen and other groups of people directly observing the fishery resources (eg, researchers and divers) serve as a tool to evaluate the actual trends of these stocks. Despite this, there may be a common distortion associated with this methodology, known as shifting baselines syndrome. In this syndrome, the informant tends to believe that the moment he began to observe the resource, it was in its moment of abundance, disregarding past explorations, which can lead to a false understanding of the current state of fish stocks. One way to alleviate this distortion is to include informants of different ages and experiences, seeking a retrieval of the earliest possible information. The general objective of the present research was to make a historical survey of the sighting of sharks by artisanal fishermen on the northeast coast of Brazil, evaluating changes of occurrence and size suffered by some species over time, from information provided by artisanal fishermen of different age groups and experiences. Data were collected along the coast of a Brazilian northeast portion (states of Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Bahia) in order to identify possible changes in stocks of sharks commonly sighted or fished by this group of fishermen. Four of the eight species analyzed decreased the size of the largest sharks over the years, among these four, three of them also decreased the average size. The sharks most affected by these variations were the coastal sharks. Some groups of fishermen perceive differently those variations in size suffered by sharks over the years. With the ever-increasing risk of extinction of large predators, we hope to contribute to understanding the patterns of loss of abundance of fish stocks in the recent past, the changes experienced by the populations, and to assess fishermen's knowledge of populations .
