Eutrophication is a growing problem affecting lakes all over the world. By monitoring the chlorophyll a concentration (Chla), it is possible not only to keep track of the eutrophication status of a lake, but also to describe the temporal dynamics of the phytoplankton biomass. A monitoring program should be both extensive and intensive so to account for the short and long-term variations. This may be achieved by remote sensing the Chla through an orbital sensor with high temporal resolution, such as MODIS. In this study, we used the archived MODIS land products MOD09GA and MYD09GA to produce a 15-year time series of daily Chla in the Eng. Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves (EARG) lake, one the of the most important lakes of the Brazilian semiarid region. We first used Chla data from 13 lakes of the region to fit and validated models for predicting the Chla from MODIS images and then applied one of the selected models on a 15-year series of daily images of the EARG lake. The resulting Chla time series revealed temporal dynamics associated with the hydrological regime of the lake, with the Chla falling during significant rainy periods and keeping high during the dry periods. Our results encourage the exploration of the MODIS archived imagery in other limnological studies.
