SUMMARY:

This work aims to discuss the process of women's resistance during the Military Dictatorship and the main mechanisms used by the state to repress female bodies, both politically and socioculturally, in the state of Pernambuco between the years 1968 and 1974. In this way, we consider the body as a space where physical flesh and the intangible subjective intersect, resulting in human beings who are simultaneously mind and materiality. It is within this space that relations of power, gender, and language operate, and these are the relations we seek to study throughout the research. Through official documents, we focused on defining a sample for the research and, based on it, creating a panorama of who the women under the repression’s target were and how the system endeavored to penalize them. Nevertheless, studying the documentation alone would not be sufficient to achieve our research objectives. Only through personal accounts would it be possible to analyze the perspective of those on the other side of the document: the women. Therefore, we conducted interviews with some of the women who were imprisoned and persecuted during the period and accessed testimonies given to the National Truth Commission (CNV) and the State Commission for Memory and Truth Dom Helder Câmara (CEMVDHC). Oral History enables the intersection of documented official data with everything that was left unwritten: the emotions, the violence, the thoughts, the sensations, and the pain experienced by female bodies. Consequently, this dissertation investigates the impact of the military regime on women in Pernambuco, from their political participation and the repression they suffered to the strategies of resistance, as well as the role of motherhood in the fight against the dictatorship.
