SUMMARY:

Inequality manifests itself as one of the main income problems for a nation. This derives from the fact that it is a very big obstacle to the sustainable economic growth of a country, since it prevents access to goods and services in an equitable way, thus harming a considerable portion of the inhabitants of a nation, preventing an improvement in quality of life of the population. In the Brazilian case, income inequality is also manifested from a regional perspective. Considering the indicators used in this work as a proxy for inequality, the evidence points to the fact that the Northeast is the most unequal region in Brazil. Therefore, in view of the above, it is the main objective of this dissertation, motivated by the relevance of the subject under study, to find out what are the determinants of income inequality in the Northeast of Brazil, between the years 2012 and 2019. To achieve the proposed results, this research uses the econometric analysis of panel data. The data were taken from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (PNAD Continuous), from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), from the System of Social Indicators, also from the IBGE, from the Commercial Association of São Paulo and from the Annual Accounts of the National Treasury Department (STN), found in the Brazilian Public Sector Accounting and Tax Information System (SICONFI). Preliminary results showed that the variables that capture the effects of education, taxation and income transfers, via social programs, are the ones that most significantly impact income inequality in the Brazilian Northeast.
