SUMMARY:

Discussions about the influences of climate change on tourism have grown in recent years. This concern is related to the vulnerability of communities receiving tourism, regarding the impacts on natural resources. The impacts of tourism tend to be quite significant, due to the increase of this activity worldwide. The consequences of the increase in carbon emissions reflect directly on climate change, causing damage to the environment and society, and the impacts of carbon emissions related to tourism activities are on the rise. In the face of this problem, scholars have used the environmental sustainability indicator known as "carbon footprint", created to estimate the amount of direct or indirect emissions of individuals, companies, products or activities and the impacts related to climate change. Among the activities with a larger carbon footprint, lodging facilities stand out through their consumption of electricity as one of the main "villains" of the increase of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. In this research, it is expected to know to what extent the methodologies associated with the calculation of the carbon footprint of the hotel sector can contribute to the sustainability of tourist destinations, in view of the existing methods. It will seek to analyze the methodologies associated with the carbon footprint of the hotel sector, bringing to light information that identifies the opportunities and challenges that subsidize the development of new methodologies. For this, in its methodological design will be used the combination of systematic investigation of literature with bibliometric review, bringing together qualitative and quantitative aspects. It is expected with this research to know the main methodologies associated with the calculation of the carbon footprint of the hotel sector, in order to disclose the most successful methods in the measurement of the carbon footprint of the means of lodging, while they can be to reduce the footprint of the hotel sector on the environment.
