Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is related to the occurrence of a series of deficiencies
that affect social, communication, developmental, and behavioral functioning, which
vary in terms of presentation and severity. Thus, the diagnosis within the family context
triggers a complex and overwhelming adaptation process, requiring the family to deal
with understanding the disability, appropriate treatment, and adaptation to the specific
needs of individuals. Therefore, Caregiver burden refers to the responsibilities due to
adopting the caregiver role and their emotional and physical reactions related to this
context. The research aims to validate the nursing diagnosis of Caregiver burden in
caregivers of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder. This is a methodological
study, through content and clinical validation of the nursing diagnosis of Caregiver
burden according to the model proposed by Lopes and Silva (2016). In order to achieve
the research purpose, it will be carried out in two stages, namely: content validation by
experts and clinical validation, operationalized by a diagnostic accuracy study. For
content validation, 23 judges of various expertise levels will be recruited to analyze the
adequacy of the label and elements of the diagnosis in relation to the degree of
adequacy and permanence of each item. Weighted mean and median of the evaluations
will be calculated, as well as the IVC estimate. Clinical validation will take place at the
Association of Parents and Friends of Autistic People of Rio Grande do Norte and at the
State Center for Rehabilitation and Specialized Ambulatory Care, located in the city of
Natal, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. 130 informal caregivers who accompany
individuals with ASD and are affiliated with one of the institutions will be eligible. Data
will be extracted through interviews to obtain information about the clinical indicators
of the nursing diagnosis, validated by experts, and the inference of the sensitivity and
specificity of the clinical indicators will be done through the Latent Class Analysis
method. The study will comply with the recommendations of Resolution No. 466/12,
approved by the National Health Council of the Ministry of Health, and will be
reviewed by the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of Rio
Grande do Norte (UFRN). It is expected that, according to the research findings, new
contributions will be made to the nurse's clinical reasoning process and critical
judgment in assisting caregivers who exhibit Caregiver burden, aiming to support the
application of the Nursing Process and accuracy in diagnostic inference that integrate
comprehensive and resolutive care.
