INFLUENCE OF PROTESTANT BELIEFS ON PROMOTING THE MENTAL HEALTH OF PRACTITIONERS OF THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BRAZIL: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDY
Protestantism, Mental Health, Religiosity, Health Promotion.
The influence of Protestantism transcended the realm of religion, having a major impact on the social, political, economic and cultural development of the society in which it was inserted. Protestant churches often serve as centers for mental health prevention and intervention. Positive religious coping is associated with better mental and physical health outcomes, such as lower levels of depression and anxiety, while negative coping can increase emotional distress and hinder the recovery process. The study aims to carry out an ethnographic analysis of the influence of Protestant beliefs on the promotion of mental health among practitioners of the Presbyterian Church of Brazil in Várzea Alegre - CE. This is a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory ethnographic study based on Nola J. Pender's theoretical model of health promotion. The research will be carried out in the municipality of Várzea Alegre, located in the Cariri region in the state of Ceará, specifically in the context of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Brazil. Participant observation will be used, with a six-month immersion in the place where the study will take place. All individual and collective movements and manifestations that relate the phenomenon of faith to the promotion of mental health will be observed. A field diary will be kept to record and organize the information collected during the participant observation process. Photography will also be used as a data collection technique. A semi-structured interview script will also be used. For the inclusion criteria of the interviews: subjects who are members of the institution and who have been there for at least 6 (six) months, regularly attend the rites, such as: weekly services; bible school; follow the liturgical principles and moments of support and counseling that are related to the participant's quality of life. Exclusion criteria: under 18 years of age, attending another doctrine or religion, and those who did not show up at the data collection site. The Consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) will also be used to guide the interviews. The data collected through the interviews will be prepared as a textual corpus and processed individually using the IRAMUTEQ software. To analyze the photographic records and participant observation - field diary - the content analysis technique will be used, in the form of thematic analysis. The field collection will take place after authorization has been obtained from the religious leader in charge of the contemplative space. The project will also be submitted to the Brazil Platform and sent to the Research Ethics Committee (CEP) of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN), seeking a favorable opinion for the study.
