SUMMARY:

Cancer is a chronic degenerative disease, considered the main factor of global morbidity
and mortality. In Brazil, it represents the second leading cause of death, a serious public
health problem. Among the treatments, chemotherapy stands out, as it extends the
survival of patients, although it presents some risks, such as the extravasation of
antineoplastic agents and causes harm to the patient due to the characteristics of these
compounds. In this area of complex health care and oncological treatment with
chemotherapy, nurses and nursing technicians perform specific care to ensure safety and
well-being aiming at health recovery and/or disease control. The objective is to validate
the content of a training course plan on nursing care in the prevention and treatment of
chemotherapy extravasation in cancer patients. This is a methodological study
operationalized in four stages, according to the methodological framework of
contextualized instructional design; The first involved exploratory research with 135
nursing professionals in two philanthropic hospitals specialized in cancer treatment, in
addition to the scoping review, along the lines of the Joanna Briggs Institute with
application of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses
extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) protocol; in the second and third stages,
a course plan was developed supported by the scoping review and the results of the
exploratory research based on David Kolb's experiential learning framework and Betty
Neuman's nursing systems theory; the last stage corresponded to the validation of the
course content through expertise and the application of the Delphi technique for
consensus among expert judges, applying the average of the content validation index
together with the Kappa coefficient. From the results obtained, the scoping review
included 22 studies and mapped the main nursing care related to the prevention and
management of chemotherapy extravasation, covering everything from the evaluation
and monitoring of venous access to the education of the patient and the nursing team.
Regarding the characterization of the nursing professionals, the majority of the
interviewees were female (85.71%), married (46.21%), mixed race (60.15%) and
Catholic (59.40%). In addition, the majority of the participants (84.96%) stated that they
knew in part about cancer treatment with chemotherapy. Regarding the learning style,
the majority (36.84%) had an accommodating profile when it comes to the learning
style. It was concluded that the construction and validation of this educational
technology was well evaluated by the experts and will contribute to the training and
acquisition of skills of nursing professionals, with an emphasis on preventive care and
management of antineoplastic agent extravasation.
